The historical significance of the founding ceremony:

n October 1, 1949, the world-renowned founding ceremony of the People's Republic of China was held in Peiping. When the artillery and motor vehicle detachments passed in front of the rostrum, a formation of aircraft appeared in the sky at the same time. A total of 26 aircraft of various types of the People's Air Force flew over Tiananmen Square.

After the 9 P-51 fighter jets of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd squadrons passed over Tiananmen Square, the pilots increased their speed at the command of the air commander, made a right rear turn over Fuxingmen, and then turned to Jianguomen along Xizhimen, Deshengmen, Andingmen, Dongzhimen. When they arrived over Dongdan, they connected with the training aircraft of the 6th squadron and passed over Tiananmen Square again. (The P-51D Mustang fighter was also among them.) Today I will introduce the P-51D Mustang fighter used in the founding ceremony of the People's Republic of China.

The power system of the P-51D is the Merlin engine (V-1650) produced by the American Packard Company under the authorization of the British Rolls-Royce Company. The engine is equipped with a two-stage, two-speed mechanical supercharger to fully improve the power output above 15,000 feet. After this improvement, the performance of the P-51 "Mustang" fighter has been greatly improved, and its maximum high-altitude speed has been increased from the prototype's 614 km/h to 703 km/h.

In terms of firepower, the P-51D is equipped with six 12.7mm machine guns and 1,880 rounds of ammunition. The two inner guns hold 400 rounds each, and the four outer guns hold 270 rounds each. It can also carry 2 bombs or 6 rockets. It can be said that it is a multi-purpose fighter nowadays. Of course, the P-51 also has an attack aircraft version, which is the A-36 attack aircraft.

After the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the United States provided the Kuomintang Air Force with more than 150 P-51 aircraft of various types under the Lend-Lease Act. During the War of Liberation, a batch of P-51 aircraft were seized by our army or flown back to our army by the rebels. In August 1949, our army's first flight squadron was formed mainly with these aircraft.

A total of nine P-51s participated in the founding ceremony of the People's Republic of China on October 1, 1949. At that time, 9 planes passed Tiananmen Square twice. There were actually 17 planes of 5 types participating in the parade, so people saw a total of 26 planes, which boosted the morale of the people across the country. At the same time, in order to ensure the smooth progress of the founding ceremony and protect the safety of the capital Beijing, 4 of the parade planes flew with bombs. This is not only unique in the history of our military parades, but also in the history of world parades.
