In 1992, the Taiwanese Air Force ordered 150 F-16A/B fighter jets from the United States. The F-16A is a single-seat fighter, while the F-16B is a two-seat combat/trainer aircraft. Among them, 120 were A models, with serial numbers 6601–6720, and 30 were B models, with serial numbers 6801–6830. Deliveries began in 1993 and were completed by the end of 2000. These aircraft were assigned to the 4th Tactical Fighter Wing stationed in Chiayi (76 units) and the 5th Tactical Fighter Wing in Hualien (74 units).
Although the F-16A/B has been fully retired from the U.S. military, it remains a relatively advanced lightweight fighter internationally.
The F-16 fighter was developed by General Dynamics in the 1970s as a complementary aircraft to the F-15, forming a high-low capability mix. To this day, it remains one of the mainstay aircraft of the U.S. Air Force. Since 1976, nearly 4,600 units have been produced and sold to nearly 30 countries and regions, making it the most-produced and most successful third- or third-plus-generation fighter in U.S. history.
