The USS Enterprise (CVN-65) was the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in the U.S. Navy and the world, as well as the only completed ship of its class, the Enterprise-class.
The USS Enterprise had a main hull dimension of 342.3 meters × 40.8 meters × 11.9 meters, with a crew complement of 3,215 personnel. It was powered by eight A2W pressurized water reactors, driving turbo-electric propulsion with four shafts and four propellers, achieving a maximum speed of 35 knots and a range of 400,000 nautical miles at 20 knots. Its flight deck measured 331.6 meters × 76.8 meters, with a maximum aircraft capacity of 84 planes.
The USS Enterprise was designed starting in 1950, laid down on February 4, 1958, at Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company, launched on September 24, 1960, and commissioned on November 25, 1961. After 51 years of active service—the longest of any U.S. aircraft carrier—it held its decommissioning ceremony on December 1, 2012.
