The Boeing Chinook HC.Mk 1 (British variant of the CH-47) played a pivotal role in the 1982 Falklands War as part of the RAF's No. 18 Squadron. Deployed aboard the cargo ship SS Atlantic Conveyor, these helicopters were intended to provide heavy-lift support for British forces during the campaign to retake the Falkland Islands from Argentine occupation.
Critical Logistics Role: The Chinooks were tasked with transporting troops, artillery, and supplies across the islands' rugged terrain.
Tragic Loss of Atlantic Conveyor:
On 25 May 1982, the ship was struck by Argentine Exocet missiles, sinking with 3 of the 4 deployed Chinooks (only "Bravo November" (ZA718) survived).
The surviving Chinook became legendary, conducting 168 missions in 30 days—including a record 81-troop airlift—under constant threat.
Adaptations for War:
Repainted in dark green/black camouflage (replacing standard RAF gray).
Fitted with radar warning receivers and door-mounted machine guns (L7A2 GPMGs).
