The CH-47 Chinook is a multi-role, twin-engine, tandem-rotor medium-lift transport helicopter developed and manufactured by Boeing. Its unique tandem rotor design eliminates the need for a tail rotor, enabling vertical takeoff/landing and a top speed of 165 mph (265 km/h). Its primary missions range from troop transport to battlefield resupply.
Exported to 16 countries, the largest operators are the U.S. Military and the British Royal Air Force (RAF). The CH-47 first appeared in combat during the Vietnam War (1962) and has remained in service for over half a century. Remarkably, it continues to be modernized and sought after globally - but why?
The CH-47 Chinook's development began in 1956, with the CH-47A variant entering service with the U.S. military in 1963. Subsequent upgrades led to the B, C, and D models.
CH-47A Technical Specifications:
Original Engines: 2 × Lycoming T55-L-5 turboshaft engines (2,200 shp / 1,640 kW each)
Upgraded Engines: Later replaced with T55-L-7 engines (2,650 shp / 1,980 kW each)
Empty Weight: 14,982 kg
Maximum Payload Capacity: 4,500 kg
This foundational design established the Chinook's reputation for power and lift capability, which has been progressively enhanced through later variants like the CH-47D/F with significantly greater performance.
